Velvet: the star fabric for men's winter shirts

by Giuseppe Trezza |

The absolute protagonist of the autumn-winter collections is velvet, a noble fabric that dates back to ancient times. Its origin is Western and is estimated to have occurred around the 13th century. It was produced mainly in Genoa, Lucca, Florence, and Catanzaro, then spread throughout the peninsula as a symbol of wealth and nobility. This fabric has a vintage charm that harks back to the seventies, another historical period in which velvet had its boom in men's and women's fashion. This winter it returns and appears in the men's wardrobe, especially in shirts to create modern and warm outfits for every day or more sophisticated looks.

How to combine a corduroy shirt?

You can invigorate velvet by playing with contrasts, for example by pairing the shirt with jeans and a smooth velvet jacket, focusing on seasonal colors such as college green or burgundy.
If you are looking for a total seventies style, pair your shirt with wide-wale corduroy trousers to create a matching effect.
If you prefer a more sophisticated style, you can combine a more chic item like solid-color wool chino trousers or a checkered pattern.

How to combine velvet with cotton shirts?

To get your style right, pair your padded corduroy jacket with a denim shirt or a checkered shirt. Corduroy suits return this season with new cuts and refreshed models; pair it with a flannel shirt to create a tone-on-tone effect. Focus on contrasts by pairing a classic oxford shirt with a corduroy jacket with large pockets and elbow patches.
